Interview blunders for Jacksonville jobs

What are some weird interview blunders that occurred during interviews for Jacksonville jobs? Careerbuilder took a look at some of the strangest in a recent survey.

Fifty percent of employers know within the first five minutes of an interview if a candidate is a good fit for a position — on par with 49 percent last year.

When asked to share the biggest mistakes or most unusual things job candidates have done during the interview process, employers and hiring managers recalled the following:

  • Candidate took a family photo off of interviewer’s desk and put it into her purse.
  • Candidate started screaming that the interview was taking too long.
  • Candidate said her main job was being a psychic/medium and tried to read interviewer’s palm, despite interviewer’s attempts to decline the offer.
  • When asked what her ideal job was, candidate said “painter of birdhouses.” (Company was hiring for a data entry clerk.)
  • Candidate sang her responses to questions.
  • Candidate put lotion on her feet during the interview.
  • When asked why he wanted the position, candidate replied, “My wife wants me to get a job.”
  • Candidate started feeling interviewer’s chest to find a heartbeat so they could “connect heart to heart.”
  • Candidate had a pet bird in her shirt.
  • Candidate took phone interview in the bathroom – and flushed.

Before the interview, ask yourself: “Why am I a good fit for this job?” Then practice answering typical interview questions with a friend, colleague or coach. According to the CareerBuilder survey, the most common questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself: 55 percent
  • Why do you want this job?: 50 percent
  • Why did you leave your last job?: 50 percent
  • What is your greatest strength and greatest weakness?: 49 percent
  • Describe a difficult work situation and how you overcame it: 48 percent

Will employees look for different Jacksonville jobs in the new year?

Some employees may be seeking different Jacksonville jobs in the near year, according to a survey from Careerbuilder.

More than one in five employees (21 percent) are pledging to leave their current employers in 2016, a 5 percent increase since last year (16 percent). Among younger workers, the numbers are starker.

Three in 10 employees ages 18 to 34 (30 percent) expect to have a new job by the end of 2016, compared to 23 percent last year. To keep their resolution to find a new job, 34 percent of employees are regularly searching for job opportunities, even though they’re currently employed — a four point increase since last year (30 percent).

New Year’s Resolutions at Work

Aside from finding a new job, the top New Year’s resolutions that workers say they’re making for the office this year are:

  • Save more of my pay: 38 percent (vs. 42 percent last year)
  • Be less stressed: 28 percent (vs. 34 percent last year)
  • Get a raise or promotion: 26 percent (vs. 26 percent last year)
  • Eat healthier at work: 19 percent (vs. 25 percent last year)
  • Learn something new (take more courses, training, seminars): 17 percent (vs. 22 percent last year)

Looking back, workers had the same top five resolutions for 2015, and while not all of their goals were met, here’s what was accomplished:

  • Eat healthier at work: 13 percent
  • Be less stressed: 12 percent
  • Save more of my pay: 11 percent
  • Learn something new (take more courses, training, seminars): 9 percent
  • Perform better on the job: 8 percent

What Workers Are Looking For

When asked what factors rank as more important than salary when considering a position, employees said:

  • Job stability: 65 percent
  • Affordable benefits: 59 percent
  • Location: 56 percent
  • Good boss: 51 percent
  • Good work culture: 46 percent

When asked if they could choose extra perks to make their workplace more satisfying, the most popular choices workers pointed to include:

  • Half-day Fridays: 38 percent
  • On-site fitness center: 23 percent
  • Daily catered lunches: 22 percent
  • Massages: 18 percent
  • Being able to wear jeans: 16 percent

 

Construction jobs in Jacksonville grow

Many more construction jobs in Jacksonville were added, according to the most recent labor statistics.

Employment increased by 211,000 in November, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.0 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In November, the unemployment rate held at 5.0 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, at 7.9 million, was essentially unchanged. Over the past 12 months, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons are down by 0.8 percentage point and 1.1 million, respectively.

Job growth occurred in construction, professional and technical services, and health care. Employment in mining and information declined over the month.

Employment in construction rose by 46,000 in November, with much of the increase occurring in residential specialty trade contractors (+26,000). Over the past year, construction employment has grown by 259,000. In November, professional and technical services added 28,000 jobs.

Job gains occurred in accounting and bookkeeping services (+11,000), and employment in computer systems design and related services continued to trend up (+5,000). Over the year, professional and technical services has added 298,000 jobs. Health care employment increased by 24,000 over the month, following a large gain in October (+51,000).

In November, hospitals added 13,000 jobs. Health care employment has grown by 470,000 over the year. Employment in food services and drinking places continued to trend up in November (+32,000) and has risen by 374,000 over the year.

Retail trade employment continued to trend up in November (+31,000) and has increased by 284,000 over the year.

In November, job gains occurred in general merchandise stores (+12,000) and motor vehicle and parts dealers (+9,000).

Over the past 12 months, these industries have added 85,000 jobs and 71,000 jobs, respectively. Employment in mining continued to decline in November (-11,000), with losses concentrated in support activities for mining (-7,000).

Since a recent peak in December 2014, employment in mining has declined by 123,000. Information lost 12,000 jobs over the month.

Within the industry, employment in motion pictures and sound recording decreased by 13,000 in November but has shown little net change over the year.
