CSX just announced a record-setting second quarter and that the company will be hiring heavily for transportation jobs in Jacksonville.

While retail jobs in Jacksonville have taken a hit, transportation jobs are increasing statewide.

The company reported earnings of $506 million, or $0.46 per share, versus $414 million, or $0.36 per share, in the same period last year. This represents a 28 percent year-over-year improvement in earnings per share.

A new survey shows that retail jobs in Jacksonville may be unexpectedly decreasing.

The number of planned job cuts
announced by U.S.-based employers increased by 4,297 or 11.6 percent to
41,432 in June. Despite the increase, the overall pace of downsizing through
the first half of 2011 is at the lowest level since 2000, according the latest
report on downsizing activity released Wednesday by global outplacement
consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
